Here is my latest column for the Brookline Tab.  Much of this story has already appeared in this blog, but I always post my publications, so…  Enjoy it again!

I’m looking forward to a trip to HEB with one or both of my boys being that calm. Today younger one just rode in the basket of the cart, older one helped push the cart, but he was having a bad “motor noise” day, so we had to stay away from the refrigerated cases as much as possible, and eggs were checked as rapidly as possible. We didn’t do the self-checkout; hauling up more than 1 12-pack of a particular kind of soda to scan and then put back on the bottom rack of the cart didn’t seem like a fun thing for me, somehow. I try to take them through the self-checkout whenever feasible. Their sister scans stuff reasonably well. (She was elsewhere this afternoon, having a wonderful time there.)

At least there were cascarones today, it being the day before Easter, and I got 3 dozen. Younger son cracked a dozen in the back yard after we got home, which was a good way for him to wind down from the expedition. I should try to check on Monday for clearance-priced cartons….

I work in a life skills classroom in a public high school nearby, and I love when we take our students who are on the autism spectrum and who have developmental delays to the grocery store, to the mall, on the T, etc. Unfortunately, not all parents are on board with us when it comes to taking their kids out to experience real life and to prepare for the future, whatever it may be for them. We recently took a trip to a large mall (where we’ve gone before) and went on a “scavenger hunt” to learn how to maneuver through a typical shopping mall, and practiced money/budgeting skills when buying lunch and snack in the food court. To see the students become more and more comfortable each visit to the mall is incredible.
I love what I do 🙂
