Nat has invented his own form of lying.<\/p>\n
When he came home from school Friday afternoon, I noticed he was losing his voice.\u00a0 All of the “silly talk”\u00a0 was silly whispering.\u00a0 As soon as I remarked on it, Nat said, “Social group.”\u00a0 Anytime I pointed out that he was sick, he would say, “Social Group.”\u00a0 So he was letting me know he was sick by basically saying, “please let me go to social group anyway.”\u00a0 Yet he would never say, “Yes,” when I asked him if he was sick.<\/p>\n
The next day his voice was almost gone.\u00a0 And he had a swollen pink goopy left eye.\u00a0 “Oh Nat,” I said. “You have pink eye.”<\/p>\n
“Circus,” he whispered.\u00a0 Saturday they were supposed to go to the circus.<\/p>\n
“But Nat, you’re sick.”<\/p>\n
“Circus.”<\/p>\n
Nat had drawn a line in the sand.\u00a0 And I hate disappointing him.\u00a0 But he is so cute, so wide-eyed (at least his right eye was) and transparent in his desires.\u00a0 So honest.\u00a0 And yet also dodging the truth:\u00a0 pink eye.\u00a0 A pink lie.\u00a0 So against my best judgment Nat went to the circus.<\/p>\n
Today his eye was cemented closed by that conjunctivitis crust and his cough is even juicier.\u00a0 We have no activities today.\u00a0 But our doctor does have a few Sunday hours.\u00a0 “Nat, I’m taking you to the doctor today.”<\/p>\n
“Yes,” he whispered, accepting a warm compress and a blanket.\u00a0 Now it’s serious — now that there’s nothing fun planned!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
