I trimmed down and polished up a recent blog post that made its way into my favorite media source, The Washington Post. Here it is, for the record. You can never get enough of this discussion, in my opinion.
Susan, After a 20-something girl told me to “shut my retard” up, at the grocery store…I had to rethink the word. Now, if she had said, “Please shut your retarded daughter up”, I would not have been offended for my daughter. She used the word “retard” as a weapon against my beautiful 17 year old daughter, which in turn, upset her 47 year old mother. 2 of my daughters and 1 son are labeled Mentally Retarded and Autistic. The labels are just that…not definitions of who they are.
