Real Live

Today I’ll be on the air, live, at noon EST and 9am PST, on www.jpr.org.  This is an NPR affiliate, Jefferson Public Radio, operating out of Mendocino, CA and Eugene, OR.  The interesting thing here is that I forgot that Nat has an early dismissal today, and so he will be arriving home right in the middle of the phone interview!  His bus driver often walks him to the door and knocks, and waves good-bye to me after handing Nat over; Nat’s teacher calls at 12:30 to give me the weekly update.  Nat comes in, unpacks his stuff upstairs, zooms downstairs looking to eat, stomping loudly…  I stop him, hug him, ask how he is… I am going to tell the radio host beforehand what’s going on.  It is “Autism Mom’s Survival Guide” in action, I guess!

Your book arrived yesterday. I can’t wait for the troops to head out so that I can pour another cup of coffee and start reading. I have a feeling it’s one of those books I’ll wind up buying multiple copies of and loaning out to friends. Thank you for writing and talking and continuing to advocate. It’s a long road, isn’t it?

I read your book in one sitting the first day I got it (after all the boys were asleep or at least zipped into tents).

It really hits the nail on the head in so many areas. Especially the hovering guilt that autism parents have (did I pick the right therapy, did we get enough therapy, am I evil for giving him milk, etc., etc)

The ending was great… there isn’t going to be a secret to coming to peace with it all, but you take the joy and peace where you can find it.
