Nat really loves communicating, now. I guess after almost 23 years of struggling with talking, it must be a heavenly relief to do it some other way. The first time I ever heard of autistic people communicating through typing was Amanda Baggs’ video, In My Language. The second time was through Arthur Fleischmann, Tammy Starr and their wonderful daughter Carly.
Here is Nat’s latest email:

Susan this is so encouraging to me. My son is 11 and though he is verbal he does not speak spontaneously at all. We get one and two word answers. He bites his arms in frustration frequently because he’s upset about something he can’t tell us and we can’t figure out. We’ve tried to get him to type and use assistive technology but to no avail. This post was such a good reminder that it may still happen someday. Thanks for the hope! Diana
My nine-year-old is still using icons to communicate via iPad, but I’m still hopeful someday we’ll get more. Thanks for reminding me it can still happen at any time!
Precious, I would break down in tears if I got a note written like this to me from my guy.
